1 tip for learning faster (and it's so easy!)

What:

We retain new information better when we space out our learning.

This goes for all types of learning, including learning new movements; for instance, mobility training is learning. It is teaching your brain how to move your muscles in more ways. 

Why?

Your brain gets tired, basically! 

In a 2020 study*, researchers used EEGs to look at the brain activity of participants learning new things through "spaced repetition" and those learning through "massed repetition". 

They found that the activity levels of the brain just...kinda petered out with massed repetition, much like my interest in fitting in and pleasing everybody as I get older. Petering. Out. 😄

And in case you're thinking:

"But does this apply to ALL kinds of learning, across VARIOUS tasks, disciplines, and types?" 

Well, a guy called Frank Dempster** already did the work for you with a review of over 100 studies done on spaced learning and concluded that yes, this goes for all types of learning.

I mean...duh...EVERYTHING YOU DO happens because of the brain. So if brain is tired, everything is tired.

How:

Wanna apply this to your movement practice? It goes for building strength, mobility, and learning a new skill, like compass pose -- our movement focus this month on Move With Adell 😘.

Show up regularly to your movement practice --even if it's just for a few minutes -- instead of cramming it all in. 
​(If "cramming it all in" is all you can do and it's that or nothing, then GREAT...keep at it! But if you have a choice, choose spaced repetition!)
