Mobility isn’t the goal. This is.

"Brainy What-Why-How"

Your weekly nibble of science-backed goodness to help you move better and feel unstoppable.

🧠

What:

Mobility is foreplay 😏

What your joints really want is motor control 💦

Why:

“Mobility” has been internet-famous for years — and honestly, deserved. It helped a whole generation move past limp, passive stretching and start building strength too.

(Flexibility + strength = mobility. We love a power couple.)

But mobility isn’t the end game.

Joint Motor Control (JMC) is.

JMC is your brain’s ability to control a joint through its full range — position, speed, timing, direction, smoothness.

In other words: making your joints SMART, not just pliable.

Example: your ankle in a balance flow such as tree pose → warrior 3 → hand-to-big-toe.

If your ankle is stiff and statue-like, you’re kissing the floor.

If it’s smart though? It’s constantly making tiny micro-adjustments — mostly unconscious — responding to shifts in speed, balance, and center of mass like a cat on a wobbly fence — calm, responsive, and weirdly unbothered 🐱

Every joint needs this kind of intelligence.

Without it, you get delayed muscle firing, unnecessary tension, sloppy compensations, reduced strength… and sometimes pain.

No thanks!

How:

Keep your mobility work — but make it move.

Add circles, rotations, diagonals. Change the speed. Add rhythm.

In Handstand Club, we’re opening shoulder range and teaching the shoulders how to behave once they’re there.

Last week: mobility into end range + small shoulder circles (hello JMC).

Next week: those same circles, but timed to a metronome — waking up the 🧠 cerebellum and 🧠 premotor cortex so your shoulders get even smarter… and your handstands feel way more confident.

Or try this:

In tabletop pose, take one leg out to the side and — moving only through the hip — draw an * asterisk * in the air with your foot.

Flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, diagonals.

Already abducted. Already spicy. Yum 🤤 🔥 🍑

The options are endless.

It’s fun and functional — the best kind of relationship 🥲
