What:

Your brain has maps of your body. 

Just as you might use a map to get around a new city, your brain uses maps to understand what's happening in each part of your body.

But if an area of your map is blurry, you can experience a threat response* from that area of your body.

*pain, discomfort, fatigue, lack of coordination, loss of mobility, loss of strength, et al.


Why?

Your brain always wants to keep you safe. And...

It feels safer if it can predict and clearly see. (Just as you probably feel safer if you have a really good map of an unfamiliar city you're in -- Learn a little more about brain maps in this video excerpt I made for you.)

Maps can become "blurry" when the brain doesn't get enough information from an area. 

This can occur through some sort of injury, surgery, or a number of other experiences. 

But it can also occur through a LACK OF MOVEMENT. Because movement gives the brain information!

So if you hardly ever move your shoulders into this position in everyday life:

Then your brain hasn't had a lot of data to populate its map of your shouldersin this position

It may therefore feel threatened when at a yoga class, you do something like this:

How to apply this information? 

You can give your brain more information by moving an area (such as your shoulders) deliberately, with intention, and through gentle and progressively harder movements.
