There's mindful movement and then there's mindful movement...
"Brainy What-Why-How"
Your weekly nibble of brain-based tips to help you move and feel great!
🧠
What:
Movement is so much more than just flexibility, or strength, or balance.
But we're only good at what we practice.
Why:
We get good at what we practice, and we lose the ability to do the things we don't practice.
Being able to move well -- whether through your yoga practice or just through life -- involves:
being able to produce force,
to control your movements (accuracy, coordination, building speed appropriately, stopping appropriately)
and to have the stamina to keep going.
How:
To train all the aspects of movement, try not to get stuck in the same-old-same-old.
If you're showing up and doing the same familiar movements, that's good.
If you're showing up and doing the same familiar stuff but adding more load or reps, that's better.
If you're showing up and challenging your comfort zone by training new movements done in new ways, changing your speed, changing the force you need to create, changing what you need to do to plan and adapt to a movement, then that's best!
THIS ☝️ is why my yoga flows are a bit weird.
But I believe yoga asana is the best way to introduce unfamiliar movements because we're practising with mindfulness, with a calm breath, with no sense of competitiveness, which puts the body and brain in an ideal place for this!
