A super easy breath technique for better backbends
"Brainy What-Why-How"
Your weekly nibble of brain-based tips to help you move and feel great!
ðŸ§
What:
If you breathe in, filling your lungs as much as you can, then this can help with extension*
*e.g. backbends, removing a hunched spine, bringing your arms behind you, hip thrusts, etc.
More on the neurology of breath in my new Vlog
Why:
Signals to breathe live in your brainstem (which also does a whole lot of other things).
The brainstem is divided into 3 sections: the midbrain, the pons, and the medulla.
The pons is responsible for saying "hey that's enough inhaling! Can you please exhale now!"
The pons is ALSO responsible for facilitating extensor tone (that's our backbends* etc)
How:
By making the pons light up with this urge to make you exhale, you can also see improvements in your extension!
I add this breath technique to many of my classes on Move With Adell and this month I'm also including many other breath techniques for our theme: Pranayama.
I go a little more in-depth in this month's vlog, which is totally free to watch HERE (complete with timestamps to skip ahead!)
Thank you for reading! Hit reply if you have any questions!
And please share with a friend or colleague who might find this valuable.
Don't forget to breathe,
Adell xoxo
