Tingling arm or legs? Let's talk nerves...

"Brainy What-Why-How"

Your weekly nibble of brain-based tips to help you move and feel great!

🧠

What:

You may get a tingling or electric feeling* in your arms or legs sometimes doing certain yoga poses such as:

  • side plank (in the supporting arm)

  • downward dog (in either leg)

  • staring-at-your-phone-asana (oops, not a yoga pose) (in your pinky finger that's holding your phone)

Why:

The nerves that bring information from your muscles, fascia, skin, and organs to your brain πŸ¦΅βž‘️ 🧠

(and the other way, from brain to body) πŸ§  ➑️🦡

are set tightly amongst all that fascia, muscle tissue, bones, skin, and blood vessels.

Those nerves are meant to move and stretch, just like all the other soft tissues!

Sometimes they can get trapped, compressed, or just a little stiff, amongst all this other stuff going on in your (very beautiful and sexy πŸ˜‰ ) limbs.

This can lead to pain, numbness, tingling, or loss of muscle activation (so: loss of mobility!)

But a simple technique called nerve mobilisation can help with all that, and it's super easy and effective!

How:

Let's say you get weird sensation down your supporting arm in side plank (our focus this month on Move with Adell).

Typically the position your arm is in for side plank is pulling that nerve tight, from the point it exits the spinal cord, to where it ends in your fingers and hands.

1️⃣ Try the exercise of "slackening" the nerve as I show in this short video.

2️⃣ You can also put your arm into the side plank position (without actually doing side plank) and bend and straighten the elbow a few times.

This may help with the tingling. You only need to do it for 10 seconds or so, and keep it on the gentle side πŸ˜Š

Stay curious (it protects against cognitive decline),

Adell xoxo
