How to make REAL change happen

Your weekly nibble of brain-based tips to help you move and feel great!

What:
Change in our habits, patterns -- the things that come easily and automatically -- happens when we make those changes from a place of safety.
Let's take learning to fall from handstand as an example (which you need to be able to do if you want to learn handstand!):
Falling makes you feel unsafe.
So we need to make your nervous system feel safe about falling.

Why:
Imagine two people with opposed political views trying to shout, shame, and finger-point their way to consensus.
Doesn't work right?
You'd be much more likely to get someone with different opinions to you to listen to your point of view if you make them feel safe:
by listening to their perspective,
showing you respect those beliefs and where they're coming from,
and pointing out all the ways you both agree,
you set up a place of safety to offer a different way to see things 😉
The same goes with how you approach changes to your nervous system:
you can't force, shame, or verbally assault yourself into making changes.
Your nervous system isn't wired to change towards threat.
Your nervous system always favours safety.
How:
Going back to our example of falling: understand your fear of falling is NATURAL and NORMAL.
It's your brain wanting to stay safe.
So constantly reinforcing "I am safe" and "this is alllllll good" as you:
visualise yourself falling,
see others fall from handstands or arm balance,
practice falling into a big pile of cushions,
do "mini falls" from handstand, where you're not fully falling but bringing yourself through little falls like I demonstrate in my YouTube video
Even if you're not learning handstands, I hope this is helpful. Because you can apply this template of
"create safety then gently nudge change"
to any aspect of life 😉
The calmer you are, the more powerful you are,
