Movement medicine: what's your dosage?
"Brainy What-Why-How"
Your weekly nibble of brain-based tips to help you move and feel great!
🧠
What:
Exercise is a drug!* Just as you wouldn't take heartburn medicine for a headache, nor would you give a child the same dose you'd give a grown man, it's important to get your movement medicine dosage right!
Why?
Each and every one of us has a unique nervous system, based on all the things that we've been through in our lives up till now, and all the things we inherited.
That means that doing 30 squats under a 50kg weight-- sweat pouring, muscles quivering, lungs burning-- might be the best medicine ever for someone. And it could be a gigantic overdose for another person. (Overdose = unwanted side effects 😔 )
That is, what puts one person's brain into a nice fuzzy "this is safe" feeling can send another person's brain to "my human is in DANGER! Activate all the threat responses!"
How:
Simple really: start gentle and build up. Look for that edge of your comfort zone, where you're challenged, but not threatened.
This is why at the beginning of every month, when we start working on a new skill on Move With Adell, we begin with gentle flows.
Today's new Gentle Hip Freeing Spine Wringing Flow will put you gently into the shape of dragon squat without yet having the weight of your body bearing down on one foot.
(Next week we'll build up, with a flow that eases you further towards that dragon squat. See the pattern?)
