One massively overlooked part of moving well that you can easily train...
"Brainy What-Why-How"
Your weekly nibble of brain-based tips to help you move and feel great!
🧠
What?
Getting comfortable with changing directions quickly can be an effective way to improve overall health!
Why?
Your vestibular system (your inner ear)...
which tells your brain:
1️⃣ which way is up
2️⃣ what direction you're moving in
is like any other system in the body: use it or lose it.
If you think about it, in everyday life you probably move forwards a lot, and occasionally up and down, with your head upright.
But sometimes you might need to be able to balance yourself with your head tilted, while leaning over and squatting... like if you're putting your groceries away on the bottom shelf and you're in a hurry and your next move is to stand up and spin around to put the milk into the fridge. Ideally, you don't fall over! But it falling is one of the most common causes of serious injury in older people**.
As I explained in a previous blog*, if your vestibular system isn't functioning well, it'll take a toll on your whole entire life. So train that little inner ear of yours!
How:
Like any new, unfamiliar movements, I believe the best place to introduce them into our movement repertoire is in a yoga class where we're moving mindfully, with a smooth breath, and in a calm environment.
So consider the newest flow on Move With Adell as your opportunity to train your vestibular system's ability to keep you balanced as you switch directions from one balance to another!

Or you can simply practice balancing -- perhaps on one foot -- with your head tilted to the side and then tilting it another way. Just please do it with care!
