Actually you CAN grow new brain cells 🧠 Here's how...
I don't know about you, but I remember being warned by adults when I was a kid that everything and anything could kill brain cells. This warning came with an even more ominous sub-warning: and you don't grow new brain cells.
But turns out, that's not true...
"Brainy What-Why-How"
Your weekly nibble of brain-based tips to help you move and feel great!
🧠
What:
Your brain cells can and DO get replenished, all the time!
One way YOU can take control and get your brain to make new brain cells is through (certain types of) exercise.
Why:
Movement -- of a certain ilk -- is one of the best ways to get your body to create a protein called Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF).
When your brain gets BDNF, it's like sprinkling fertiliser on your plants -- it helps GROWTH.
How:
There's more to the story than "exercise = new brain cells".
It turns out, the hormone cortisol inhibits BDNF. And you create cortisol if your exercise gets REALLY INTENSE.
So think of it this way:
🫀Really intense exercise that gets your heart rate up = great for the heart and cardiovascular system!🫀
Yay!
But not great for neurogenesis.
🧠 Moderate exercise (think: a brisk walk, or a strong yoga flow) = great for the brain! 🧠
